July 2008

The community garden has now been ploughed and is being planted with groundnuts. An early variety has been planted and this should give a high price at market when it is harvested. The seeds have been bought by the MWA from subscriptions. There is a great community spirit with their achievements. Hopefully GRTS (Gambia Radio & Television Services) will be attending later to show what can be achieved.

June 2008

The community garden has been cleared in preparation for ploughing.

April 2008

A gardening workshop was arranged by, and for,  the women of the village. Three agiculturalists, 2 from the National Agriculture Development Agency and one from the Gambia College, came to the village for two days. It was attended on both days by 220 women and 10 men. A few days later some of the women visited the Banjulnding Womens' Garden for some practical advice and experience. FTCNS are happy to support this initiative which will bring long term benefits from the Farato-Sotokoi-Daru Women's Garden.

A new association has been set up by the village and a constitution has been drawn up. Eighty people registered immediately with the new association (the Mountsorrel Womens' Association) and that number is expected to increase.

November 2007

The sweet corn has now been harvested in the community garden.

August 2007

Seeds have germinated - looking good. Weeding now required. The sweet corn is growing very well (see photos).

July 2007

The rains have now started in The Gambia. A variety of vegetable seeds (including squashes, legumes and sweet corn) were sent to Farato with students from Longslade Community College at the beginning of July and now that the rains have started the women of the village are planting the seeds.

March 2007

Friends of Take Care Nursery School have given £180 to the Take Care Nursery Development Agency (nice one Bakary!) to enable a system of micro-loans to be set up for the benefit of the community in Farato-Sotokoi-Daru. This first round of loans have been given to six ladies, a loan of £30 each, to enable them to set up their own businesses. The loans will be repayable to the TCNDA and then the process will start again with a further group of six people. We hope to bring you good news of the successes of the ladies in due course together with any obstacles that they found and overcame on the way.

Bakary, the headmaster, described the event as follows:

"The loans were given out at the school in the form of a gathering comprising the members of various groups, committee chairman, secretary and all the members of staff. It was a very joyous occasion. Everyone was happy about it. Even the head of the village expressed his appreciation, and prayed for success".
